The Lamb of God Sequined High Neck Christian Sweatshirt

LAMB OF GOD (ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, ho amnos tou theou). A phrase John the Baptist uses in reference to Jesus of Nazareth (John 1:29, 36).

Lamb of God in the Gospel of John

The phrase “lamb of God” (ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, ho amnos tou theou) appears only twice in the New Testament (John 1:29, 36). In both cases, John the Baptist speaks the phrase when he sees Jesus coming toward him. In John 1:29, he says, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (NIV).

In saying that Jesus was the “Lamb of God,” John was declaring that Jesus was the substitute sacrifice provided by God. What a way to be announced to the world! John was also intimating that the announced Messiah came not to be a conqueror, but a suffering Savior and a Deliverer. Jesus came to do what we could not do for ourselves—take away sin. As the fulfillment of what the Passover lamb represented, Jesus would provide all believers with the means for being delivered from sin. And, just as the eating of the Passover lamb marked the beginning of Israel’s journey, so the reception of Jesus as the Lamb of God marks the beginning of every believer’s journey. The Israelites celebrate the Passover annually in order to remember God’s faithfulness when He delivered them from slavery—the time when a lamb was sacrificed to protect the firstborn of each family and Moses led them on their journey through the desert. Likewise, Christians remember Christ’s sacrifice at the time of communion. In this light, Paul declares, “Christ, our Passover lamb, is sacrificed for us; therefore, let us keep the feast” (1 Cor. 5:7).

The slain lamb also symbolizes the first step in the worship of God. Without the shedding of blood, the priests could not approach God’s presence. For Jesus to be initially presented as the Lamb of God shows that God wanted to provide a way for believers to approach Him. The shed blood of the Lamb takes care of the sin that separates people from God. With the separation removed, we can approach God to worship and commune with Him.
